These videos all feature the same few catches. The catch off YK is a beaut. But most are fairly ordinary. Watch some Trent Boult catches for freakish skills, especially in the outfield. His catch off Kohli wrong handed in the IPL last year is just a taster on his resume. Or KW for gully and point magic (all too often wasted at mid off and mid on since being captain - but he wants a better view of the game).

And where are the runouts? Rhodes did it for players since he played, which excludes Mark Waugh I guess, but I am having a hard time based on those few catches in the videos thinking of Raina as better or even in the same ball park as Punter, Clarke, Boult, KW, and Guptil.

Best Indian fielder I've seen of late is Jadeja. He dives, catches, bullet arm, runs fast, he's quite impressive. I'd take him any day over Raina.

Im amazed Punter was not on the list... his run out compilation alone...

You reckon? Harper was a gun.

But Rhodes' interview did it from his time of cricket, basically trying to make out like Jonty was the first to dive around on the field. This is of completely false.

I don't mind Jonty, he certainly was great and one of the best ever, but even in his era Aus had Mark Waugh and Dean Jones, NZ had Chris Harris (and Dipak Patel was a great fieldsman), and England played so many players - one or two must have been guns in the field. I'm struggling to think of any... They had Derek Randall from an earlier era. Jimmy Adams was terrific in the field I thought.

Jonty didn't make fielding important like he claims, it started with Bobby Simpson with that awful Aus team when he dropped Richie for being fat, and started making the team do extensive fielding drills regularly - including slip practices before the innings. This is normal practice today. It was not back then. Back then people basically just used to practice taking high catches, and not all that often. Bob Simpson changed all that.

He closed the gap between Aus and WI (Lloyd/Richardson, Richards, Logie and Harper) and surpassed them as fielding unit too.

Jones, Border, S Waugh, M Waugh, Valetta (remember him) even Swampy Marsh made the Aus fielding the best in the world by a country mile, light years ahead of everyone else... but over time the world caught up. And Boon, Taylor and Warne when not in slips or at short leg gave Aus some holes. But with Boon's specialisation at short leg, and Richie being dropped, just showed Simpson demanded the batsmen contribute something to the field so to be selected. Just scoring runs was not good enough.

So I give far more credit to Bob Simpson than Jonty. WI have often had great fielding units, dating back to L Constantine - but this more luck and natural ability than fielding drills. I'd bet most the fielding highlights of the 87/88 WC would have been Australian despite Zimbo having great fielders like Dave Houghton, or WI with Harper...

Who are the great Pakistani fieldsmen? I cannot think of any... Not a single one. For any era...

SL have had at least had T Dilshan...

Heh - I'm not the first to wonder...

Dean Jones asked the same question of Misbah...

What upsets Misbah the most is when I ask him who was Pakistan's greatest fieldsman. He is embarrassed to answer. He wants fielding skills and, even more fitness, to be improved throughout Pakistan's cricket system.

Raja - since ODI cricket, have Pakistan even had a regular selection who was a gun in the field? Ever?

Their current team is a better feilding unit under Mickey Arthur, Shadhab has skills... but I am unable to think of a gun Pakistani fieldsman, I have seen Afridi's name thrown around... surely not!

There used to be an Indian and Bombay opener named Dilip Sardesai who was once voted (in 1970 I think) as the worst fielder in the world. He once dropped 6 easy catches in an innings.

Shahid Afraidi was a good outfielder.

Lol. Play enough games, you'll take one or two useful catches. Afridi is no Trent Boult...

The greatest fielder of all time, even better than Jonty Rhodes, is generally considered to be another South African named Colin Bland. He played 21 tests in the 1960s and was a reasonably good batsman but was best known for his fielding. During the Lords test in the 1965 England tour of South Africa, he was responsible for a spectacular run out of Ken Barrington, which turned the match and averted defeat. He played a lot of county cricket and there were several memorable fielding achievements.
