The post-match interview had an interesting observation by Rameez - something that hadn't struck me.

While speaking to Sarfraz, he said "Usman Khawaja aapki zubaan samajhte hain, aap field pe jo baat kar rahe the, samajh rahe the..to ek tarah se aapke plans neutralise ho gaye na."

(Translation: Usman Khawaja understands your language....so he could understand whatever you guys were talking on the field. So in a way, your plans got neutralised, didn't they?" :-)

Sure, his reverse sweep might well be one of the best in the game - and yes, it did come off quite often.

But it remains a risky shot to play.

But full credit to him. Staying at the crease for 125.3 overs in the 4th innings of a match - just brilliant!

He himself played 302 deliveries - that's over 50 overs.

Reminded me of that Gautam Gambhir innings in New Zealand.

Khawaja faced 302 balls for his 141, grinding out the second-longest knock ever in the fourth innings of a Test.
The 31-year-old gazed to the sky and appeared to be overcome with relief as wife Rachel cried in the stands after he brought up his century shortly after lunch.
Khawaja has faced heavy scrutiny over his record in Asian conditions, while his elegant batting style has also fuelled an unfair perception of laziness.

"People think because of my relaxed nature ... that I've been gifted to be able to get to where I am," he said.
"But it's not the case at all.
"I've worked my absolute backside off for the last 10 years and really worked as hard as I can in different conditions like this and in England and other places.
"People overlook that sort of stuff. You don't get to play at the highest level without putting in the hard yards."

Chasing a world-record 462 to win, the tourists survived 140 overs in Dubai - an unprecedented effort to save a game for Australia.
Khawaja also scored a determined 85 in the first innings, combining with Aaron Finch for a 137-run opening partnership.
All up, Khawaja spent almost 13 hours at the crease with temperatures in the high 30s.

"That first innings was as tough as any innings I've played," he said.
"I came off the field with sweat through my shirt. My shirt was drenched and pants were drenched. That took it out of me a fair bit.
"I was feeling pretty good for most of it until we got to the second session with one hour left before tea, then I was withering.
"I was just asking for God to get the sun down so we could get some shade."

Concerns about Khawaja's ability to handle turning tracks meant he was overlooked during last year's Test series in India and dropped after one Test in Bangladesh.

The Queensland batsman has also had to battle critics closer to home despite averaging almost 60 in Australia.
Former Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy branded him "lazy" during last year's Ashes - a label that Khawaja showed to be folly with his magnificent effort in Dubai which was lauded by Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed.

"I have seen one of the best innings in Test cricket, especially in the fourth innings," Sarfraz said.
"The way he batted, he took Australia to the draw. He batted very well, he played most of his shots, even the reverse-sweep, so his was a brilliant knock."

It is THIS aspect that puts this innings in a different league.
Yes, it was a 4th innings effort to save the game, but to do it in those high temperatures - wow!
Statistics will never recognize this.

Looking forward to seeing him getting runs at home against BCCI.

All I said is that I hope he gets runs against BCCI.
What's so wrong with that?

One thing that went largely unnoticed was that Imam Ul-Haq actually made some useful scores against a top team.

Ireland was the source of his high test average, and in ODI - he has plundered HK, Afg, Bng, SL and Zim with total failures against NZ and Ind.

You do care more about BCCI vs English match up than Ashes test cricket!!!!!

accept it.
When it comes to BCCI hate, ashes take second fiddle.
Won’t blame you, Ashes of late are toooooooooo one sided with NO FIGHT shown by this LAME Australian team that is TOO EAGER TO BEND OVER FOR THE BRITISH. ;)

Pakistan got about 100 too many

even then Australia's best chance in this match was to roll them for under 100 and get a first innings lead batting in the best conditions (today)

they were 57 for 5 and on the ropes then the pressure was relieved

Holland was ineffective and some of the field placings were too conservative

Mark Waugh actually pronounced it the same way as the Pakistani commentators.
The other Aussie commentators have been using a G-rated version accentuating second syllable which seems to be incorrect.

57/5 should've been 150 all out.

I doubt because Aus need to hold catches to support him, he was not properly use by Paine.

Holland's captain is not sarfaraz,

I think Labu did good as allrounder in this match but unfortunately run out when it's matter most

you got to have fast paced spinners on these pitches

Australia make the same mistake every time. Holland is too slow and largely ineffective.
They should've picked Agar and you've have a much needed extra batsman too.

@thecricblogger
In the last two years, Shaun Marsh averages 16.21 from 19 innings away from home. Hasn't crossed 50 in his last 13 away innings, with eight of those scores being below 10 runs. Surely not numbers you'd expect from a top six batsman playing for Australia? #PakvAus #AusvPak

The Marsh struggles go back far further than the current series. Across his past 11 Test innings — all overseas — S.Marsh has averaged 14.27 with a high score of 40, and M.Marsh has averaged 18.27 with a high score of 96. That 96 came in the first of those 11 innings and he has not passed 50 since.

Australian team has a genuine opener problem for last couple of years.

when was the last time australia got two genuine set consistently productive openers?

Not just opener problem.
Middle-order problem too.
The Marsh brothers, batting so high up, have to be the laughing stock of the entire cricket community.
Just can't believe they're the best Australia have right now.

In the first Test, somehow Khawaja came to the party.
So Australia managed to save the match and their face.

Otherwise they're a terrible batting side right now.

14 overs, enough time for 3 or 4 wickets to fall

Shaun Marsh gone already

he's got some good deliveries in this series but maybe he's making them look like good deliveries - that could spell the end of his international career

where's Khawaja? injured? sick?

Khawaja injured his knee in the warm up

suspected cruciate ligament

would be a disaster if he missed the home series vs India
