England v South Africa 2nd Test at Trent Bridge

Postby Boycs » Fri Jul 14, 2017 10:16 am

SA batting first having won the toss.

England opening bowling has been tight. 3/0 from 4 overs and our first appeal for edge behind but it was off the thigh pad.

18/0 off 8.4. South Africa are going well and working hard so far against tight bowling. If they do the hard yards in the first......

..... and first wicket falls! Just as I type. Expansive drive and Dawson snaffles a diving catch at gully. Good catch and a reward for tight bowling. Just couldn't resist a drive.

Safrica playing 5 bowlers - uncommon selection policy for them but Philander has been fragile and the everfit Rabada is banned this game.

England plaing 4 batsmen and bowlers plus Ali and Stokes and Safrica bat 1st. Big plus for Safrica there. Looking forward to see Oliviere and C Moz in action. I like Safricas chances of winning here.

This pitch is bouncing almost as high as an Aussie one. Trent Bridge - not the prettiest test venue around. In fact its almost an eyesore.

I think South Africa are batting really well. This is the first time this series where either side have had success in the opening sessions of the innings with their top order against good bowling. Elsewhere there have just been collapses and middle order recovery. Only cook and balance in the third innings of the last test did this to a decent degree.

All done.

Cook puts down a dying low chance in the slips but England will have to take all these half chances as South Africa are bedding in for a big trench warfare-style total here

No matter how hard South Africans try, the end result remains unaltered. England, after one barren session are back on top.

This is getting too predictable.

I think this is going to be a very one-sided series.

Not only 4-0 England but crushing wins.

SA are batting like BCCI in England in 2011.

Five down now. England reaping late reward for what has been pretty excellent bowling all day.

South Africa have shown plenty of strength though I think. England are picking up wickets now but I think plenty of teams would have been 100/5 against Jimmy and broad and wood on this track in these conditions but SA have battled well.

Better than I reckon England might have done

Channelling my inner Ravi Shastri I have deduced that all 3 results are possible here but the next session is crucial to South Africa to post a score of close to or past 400.

No, theres only ever 1 result per match from 4 possible results (until combined innings scores are tied) but given Shastri was left stranded on 48* in Madras in 1986 - perhaps he has not yet come to terms with it.

England staring down the barrel of a thrashing here from a Safrican side without Rabada, Steyn and ABDV.

England selectors are muppets for only playing the 4 best batsmen in the country imo. 6 bowling options is just too much of a luxury, especially without Woakes to stiffen the tail end batting.

But merely for England to play 2 spinners and then bat second had me strongly favouring Safrica at the toss.

Ashes 5 or 4 nil to Aus is looking good so far unless England find new talent.

Hang on isn't this a bit of a turn around in opinion after one poor performance? :P

South Africa batted very well on day 1 in what has been all Test difficult batting conditions. Both England and South Africa have bowled very well. England have had the weaker batting of the two sides this Test.

But remember it was only one Test ago that we rolled them for a low score.

Zimbabwe's last 4 = 160 runs
England's last 4 = 6 runs

Eng..also lost last 4 wickets in 6 runs in 2003 vs proteas

Well Boycs - I suggest that you read my opinion on England's selection strategy for the last test. The issue isn't England rolling opposition. Its their own weak resultant batting.

This is what I wrote in previous match thread:

Paddles wrote:England may win this game, helped no end due to Philanders drop of Bairstow at 269/8, but England is soft in the middle despite Bairstow's class and Ali's consistent fighting.

Miss Woakes and his batsmanship low down no end.

Oh and a 5th batsman would help?!!!!

6 bowling options? England selectors losing the plot imo.

I think it's a lack of batting application in this test compared to South Africa's first innings and a lost toss that have put England in this position, and of course good South African bowling.

It's a bit depressing knowing that we have to endure two more innings of this when the game is already lost, but never mind. We'll get the run of the green next game and it'll be 2:1!

Picking 2 spinners and 6 bowling options (esp without Woakes) at the expense of batting and relying on winning the rub of the green and batting first is poor strategy in my opinion. You gotta actually win the toss. And even then - the 1st day could collapse as well.

But then again - if EWCB have no more half decent batsmen to pick - that is another matter.

Bar Root and Cook - the Aussie bowlers will be licking their chops for next Ashes.
