What an opportunity for C Moz.

Shame Philander, Steyn, Rabada won't be with him to give support and he'll have to lift further despite opportunistic selection due to injuries and suspension (plus Abbott's retirement). Or will Philander see a green pitch and be fit enough to play?

There is nothing wrong with having a thread for every Test. We often do it. And the first Test generated a lot of discussion.

Well CMoz embraced his opportunity with a fine all round performance, as Safrica continue to flaunt a depth of seam and all rounder talent with Steyn and Rabada to return.

I think this might be the first time England has been accused of being better at one day cricket than test cricket.

Long gone are the days of Nasser swearing at the commentators from the middle of the pitch and Maddy, Lewis and Schofield trying to make it out in the middle. Vikram Solanki, anyone?

Intrresting proposition Boycs. Englands odi world cup team of 91/92 was very very strong as against the rest of the World. Don't think the test team was anywhere near as strong as Windies or Australia. Nor Pakistan at that time for that matter. I'm not sure how they stood with Safrica at the time.

The allrounders not cutting it at tests but offering more to odi cricket, from old Beefy to Chris Lewis; Stewart keeping; and the original odi specialists like Neil Fairbrother helped to this. However that team was more famous for so many having been born outside Britain with Safricas Lamb and Smith, Hong Kong's Dermott Reeve; Zimbabwean Hick; to the Carribean originated fast bowlers incl De Freitas, Malcolm and Small. To top it off; Kenyan born Derek Pringle.

The odi team beat Windies 3-0 in 1991 while drawing the tests and they took Pakistan down 4-1 while losing the tests.

Vaughan has come out in support of Jennings and balance saying they have Test future.

I don't really know what I think. With the opening slot part of me thinks just pick one and stick with them even if they aren't the next Strauss. Cook will be retiring before we find a replacement for Strauss if we keep chopping and changing like this.

As for balance. Is it just technical deficiency? If so how did he make all those runs to begin with? A bit of minnow bashing? Flat track bullying?

And if we chuck one of them (both might be too much of a shock to team stability mid series) who comes in? Tom Westley? And where's hameed?

Balance looks like he's out with a broken finger.
Cricinfo says stoneman in like for a debut but I think that's just a guess.

Stoneman is 30 and averages less than westley who is 28 and has been in the frame for a lot longer.

But we'll see

Cricinfo have floated stoneman hameed westley and Malan as potentials to replace balance

I think it depends what England are thinking to mean by "replace."

If they want a proven and in form replacement just until balance comes back from injury then go with stoneman I reckon.

But if balance is never coming back from this then stoneman and Malan aren't really selections for the future they're 30-odd and long term averages aren't impressively high.

Westley is 28 and he too averages under 40 but he's made runs against international attacks and would be making a debut on the back of more than just one good summer. He's been talked about for a while. And his selection would have a bit more of an eye on future team growth.

Hameed seems to be out of form, favour, and maybe having some technical deficiencies ironed out but long term seems like he will be back. Where he slots in vis a vis Jennings' opening role will be a question bayliss will have to answer. If jennings survives this series that is

Meanwhile woods bowling average is now above 40 and he's taken one wicket this series.

Not a long term prospect? Or not recovered from injury?

Tom Curran, Jake ball, and Coad of Yorkshire all knocking at the door. Woakes to return as well

Mark Nicholas has just penned a critique for England batsmen playing their test cricket too much like a t20 game.

Hang on. We only just finished criticising our one day players for treating it too much like a test match!

Stop overreacting everyone. Every twist or change in fortune, positive or negative, brings out its own swathe of nodding pundits who spout "I've said this all along"

Accept that this is sport for gods sake, and take a pinch of salt with your half-rimmed-glasses-and-leather-bound-books-pontification.

To be fair - I've always said this about Stokes and his batting. Where is he in the batting order now? 5? Too high.

For mine, the biggest issue with the England team is its selection balance. Right now it is all out of kilter. But unlike the bandwagon pundits, I said it when England was winning cos I could easily foresee the losing; Root won't always score 150 plus.

Bairstow to many is young enough, but more importantly talented enough, to play more than one style. But besides him, the England team balance looks like quite downhill ski bar Root and Cook.

What are people's opinions on Wood. Worth persisting with or has he had long enough and is just too injury prone and not quite good enough?

Looks bog ordinary in English test conditions so far and too much of a 4th seam luxury after Stokes Broad and Anderson with Ali and another spinner.

Might have something overseas with his pace and reverse swing. As poor as he is in England - its not beyond let alone testing imagination to imagine him outbowling Broad and Anderson in Straya. But Woakes won't be fretting about getting back into the test team as soon as fit imo.

This Thursday I believe.

I think I saw that this test is going to be at the oval then they finish at Manchester or somewhere. Seemed odd - I thought they normally started a tour at lords and finished it at the oval.

I can't recall what pace he's been generating this series so far. Can you?

And yes I imagine woakes will be back. But whether he replaces wood or whether they rejig the team and both wood and woakes feature with broad and Jimmy and stokes and Moeen I don't know.
